A shift from group-led decision to citizen-led decision making

November 2023

This essay explores the way we currently make decisions in all kinds of group settings. It argues the case for a shift from traditional group-led decision-making, characterised by hierarchical and often adversarial structures, to a more inclusive and equitable citizen-led approach.

It highlights weaknesses in our current decision-making systems, particularly their tendency to concentrate power among elite groups and prioritise competition over collaboration. It advocates for democratic lotteries and deliberative processes, and outlines how citizen-led methods can strengthen decision-making by including diverse voices and fostering empathy to address complex challenges.
